Refugiums are a great option for natural nutrient reduction. By creating a safe harbor where macro-algae can grow, with proper conditions, algae will prefer to grow in your refugium instead of the display tank, while also consuming nitrates and phosphates as the algae grows. In the past couple of years, researchers have found that the spectrum of light for algae to grow under is completely different than what corals prefer and in some cases is the most important factor in algae health. The heavy red lighting helps increase the rate of photosynthesis leading to quicker growth and nutrient uptake, but the red light is not all that is needed.
